Steampunk NZ Fashion Show – thoughts from a first-time contestant
We spoke with Trish Riley, who on very her first Fashion Show outing, won a Beginner’s Prize...
Trish, why did you decide to go for it?
I had wanted to get to Oamaru for a few years, since starting Steampunk. The trip was financially challenging, but I made a huge effort to get to the Festival in 2017, mainly to participate in the fashion show.
How did you get started, and was it difficult?
I’ve always been very creative, and I wanted to showcase that ability. I have a great imagination and actually found creating the story quite easy.
What was the best part of your experience?
Winning, definitely! Totally unexpected! Being able to achieve that the very first time was like the cherry on top of an awesome weekend.
Would you do it again?
Yes!!!
Any other feedback?
The day at the fashion show, the assistance and support available all day was incredible. I was so impressed with the volunteers backstage. They were helping with costume repairs, dressing, feeding us, encouraging us and reassuring us, it made all the difference.
Other thoughts for people thinking about entering?
Being able to perform in a theatre in front of an audience, it’s an amazing opportunity. Many people who do Steampunk are actually quite shy, and performing as a different persona is liberating.
